Marimar Calisto

Marimar is a Research Associate at the Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Her research at CGSR investigates how Russia's invasion of Ukraine is affecting the United States’ ability to project power abroad, in particular with regard to how the invasion affects the alignment or non-alignment of key nations with the United States’ interests on various issues since the invasion began.

Originally from Lima, Peru, Marimar graduated from Yale University in 2022 with a BA in Political Science. She also received a Certificate of Advanced Study in Russian through the university’s intensive Russian program. Marimar completed her undergraduate research thesis on how Russian irredentism affects cooperation with the West on nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East. In addition to her studies, Marimar was an athlete on Yale’s women’s rugby team and an Academic All-Ivy League honoree.

A graduate of Air Force ROTC, Marimar commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force in 2022. Through the Air Force, she completed Russian-language immersion in Riga, Latvia and earned a slot in the competitive Language Enabled Airman Program to continue her Russian study. After finishing her research at LLNL, Marimar will begin her specialty training as an Air Force intelligence officer.
