2030 NATO Reflection Group Report

In 2020, Mitchell was tasked by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with co-chairing an expert commission with former German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere to provide recommendations for strengthening the political dimension of the NATO Alliance. The group of experts presented their final report to the North Atlantic Council in December. Dr. Mitchell will outline the main findings of the report and offer his thoughts on NATO's future in an era of intensifying global geopolitical competition.

Wess Mitchell served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State from 2017 to 2019. He is a principal and co-founder at The Marathon Initiative, a Washington, DC think-tank focused on great-power competition. He is also a Non-Resident Fellow at Harvard University's Belfer Center for Applied History and a senior advisor at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He is the author of three books, including most recently Unquiet Frontier: Rising Rivals, Vulnerable Allies and the Crisis of American Power (with Jakub J. Grygiel) and The Grand Strategy of the Habsburg Empire (Princeton University Press, 2018).
