Thomas Countryman will discuss current nuclear non-proliferation challenges confronting U.S. policymakers, and explain how the U.S. Department of State is approaching these challenges, including implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran, strengthening the International Atomic Energy Agency’s role in monitoring nuclear non-proliferation regimes, and enlisting international support for countering North Korea’s pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability.

Thomas Countryman, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, rank of Minister-Counselor, is currently serving as the Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN). The ISN Bureau leads the U.S. effort to prevent the spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, their related materials, and their delivery systems. Previously, he served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Political-Military Affairs, and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for European Affairs (with responsibility for Balkan affairs). The Department of State gave him the Superior Honor Award for each of his assignments at USUN, EUR/SCE, Rome and Athens.
